Becky Baxter - Lead Vocals

For one of such tender years, Becky should not be able express anguish, pain and the sweet siren call the way she plainly does in her vocals. The power of her voice is what stands out on first encounter, but listen a little closer and much, much more becomes apparent: shades of dark and light, velvet and gravel, chocolate and chili pepper, emotion in the raw and a smokeyness never far from the surface. A significant part of the ‘Riff Diamond adventure’ will be seeing just how her chiaroscuro-style singing develops over the next few years … and the band confidently expects her to get better and better.

Being part of the band has introduced Becky to the world of blues singers and she has abandoned the sterile manufactured pop music that most of her age follow and instead is busy exploring the works of Etta James, Nina Simone, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald and the like.

Back in the real world, Becky is a GCSE student working hard towards her exams. The truth, though, is that all she really wants to do is sing … and then sing some more.

Interview with Becky

Becky Baxter

When and where were you born?
I was born in 2000, 20 minutes after my twin Ella, in Derry's Altnagelvin hospital.

What got you started in music?
I just loved singing and, after a stint at Rock School, wanted to front a band. I have been lucky to meet some great musicians.

Tell us two truths and one lie about yourself.
I love random facts. I love all things Italian! I love school!

When did you start to play/sing?
I have always loved singing and have done so from an early age.

Who are your influences?
I’ve been influenced by the likes of Nirvana, The Cranberries, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Bob Dylan, James Brown, The White Stripes, Otis Redding, Howlin’ Wolf, Nina Simone, The Kinks, Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, Kings of Leon, Skip James, The Black Keys, Blondie and many more!

What are your favourite colour, film, and food?
My favourite colour would be red. I love V for Vendetta and I seriously love pasta.

Coke or Pepsi?
Neither!!!!

If you could take only three albums and one luxury to a desert island, what would they be and why?
I would probably take Nirvana's Nevermind, The White Stripes' Under The Great Northern Lights and The Cranberries' No Need to Argue. I could not live without my laptop!

Tell us about your gear. Which one item of gear could you not live without?
My mic is my favourite possession and thankfully is easily transported, unlike John's drum kit ! It's awesome!
