Dom McvAreavey – Bass Guitar/Backing Vocals

Dom is our very own “live wire” and at the average gig he does more moving and jumping about than the rest of the band put together. It was a surprise when our original bass player, Shauna, decided to pursue other genres but Dom was right there in front of us (and, as it turns out, had already been noted by our management trolls as a possible band member) and he has fitted right in in terms of both music and personality. Dom has worked really hard to get up to speed with the rest of the band and is now starting to express himself at live gigs and in the development of new songs – and we look forward to more of this as we move forward.

Dom comes from a creative design and art background and has carried this over into studying for a music diploma alongside Conal (and a few others, of course) at SERC. His transition into the band has been as close to seamless as anyone could wish for … but watch out for his strange sense of humour (and keep him away from the pellet gun!). If you want to see Dom laugh just ask him “Why did Bono fall off the stage?” (answer: he stood too close to the edge). It never gets old in Dom’s world.

Interview with Dom

Dom McvAreavey

When and where were you born?

16th August 1996 in Lagan Valley Hospital.

What got you started in music?

I always loved music and how it made me feel and how it tampered with my emotions. I was studying art and design in tech and me and my friends always used to sing songs. The teachers loved it so they said "you should do music." I then applied for it and ever since then I have been addicted to sound.

Tell us two truths and one lie about yourself.

I once came 3rd and a skateboarding competition in Belfast.
I have a cat.
I am 6ft 7".

Coke or Pepsi?

Coke.

When did you start to play / sing?

Like any child I had a guitar when I was younger and I had the ear for it. I never really stuck at it until 2000 when I picked up the electric guitar and 2014 when I picked up the bass. More recently, I have also started singing as well.

Who are your influences?

When it comes to my main influences they would be; Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Janice Joplin, Eagles, Eric Clapton, Joe Satriani, The Doors, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Nazareth, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones, Canned Heat and AC/DC.

What are your favourite colour, film and food?

Favourite colour: Green.

Favourite Film: It has to be between Goodfellas, The scent of a woman and Godfather part 2.

Favourite Food: A nice smoked crispy bacon sandwich topped off with a whack of red sauce.

If you could take only three albums and one luxury to a desert island, what would they be and why?

Album Number 1: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - "Are You Experienced?"

Album Number 2: Pink Floyd - "Dark Side Of The Moon".

Album Number 3: Bob Dylan "The Basement Tapes."

The one luxury I would bring would be a portable CD player so I could actually listen to the albums I have brought.

Luxury Item: The one luxury I would bring would be a portable CD player so I could actually listen to the albums I have brought.

Tell us about your gear. Which one item of gear could you not live without?

Currently I have one electric guitar (called "Betty" which has Dave Gilmore's pickups and a boost knob) and two bass guitars. I have an old classical guitar out in my grannies as well. I couldn't live without my electric because that's where it all started.
